I writhed and screamed with anguish. Sweat rolled from my physique. I tugged madly opposed to my bonds, strove to burst the rope that held my tortured leg. Fierce, keen growls got here wolf-like from the throat of the gnawing lady. Her leprously pallid face used to be extra smeared with blood, because it have been while I first observed her. sometimes she stopped the unendurable gnawing, to lick her lips with a dreadful pride. * * * * ultimately i may stand it not. whether the destiny of the entire earth depended upon me—as i assumed it did—I might undergo it not. “Stop! cease! ” I screamed. “I’ll let you know! ” relatively reluctantly, the girl rose, licking her purple lips. My father—I locate myself constantly calling the monster by way of that identify, however it was once no longer my father—again held the plans prior to my face, and displayed upon his palm the tiny elements for the electron tube. It took all my will to attract my brain from the throbbing ache of the clean wound in my leg. yet I defined that the filament twine must be drawn a lot finer, that the radium wouldn't do for the grid, that the plate has to be of a accomplishing steel, rather than quartz. He didn't simply comprehend my clinical phrases. The identify tungsten, for example, intended not anything to him until eventually I had defined the traits and the atomic variety of the steel. That pointed out it for him, and he seemed particularly to grasp extra concerning the steel than I did. For lengthy hours I replied his questions, and made reasons. once or twice i presumed of refusing to reply to, back. however the reminiscence of that unendurable gnawing constantly made me converse. The medical wisdom and ability displayed within the development of the machine’s elements, as soon as the requirements have been competently understood, astounded me. The monsters that had stolen those human our bodies looked as if it would have notable medical wisdom in their personal, quite in chemistry and sure branches of physics—though electrical energy and magnetism, and the modem theories of relativity and equivalence, appeared new to them, most likely simply because they got here from an international whose normal phenomena will not be almost like ours. * * * * They introduced, from one of many chambers establishing into the good corridor, a wierd, glistening equipment, which include hooked up bulbs and spheres of a few vivid, obvious crystal. First, a lump of limestone rock, which should have been dug up within the making of this underground temple, used to be dropped right into a huge decrease globe. Slowly it appeared to dissolve, forming a heavy, iridescent, violet-colored gasoline. Then, at any time when my father or one of many others needed to make any object—a steel plate or grid, a coil of cord, an insulating button, whatever wanted in development the machine—a tiny trend of it used to be skillfully shaped of a white, gentle, wax-like substance. The white development was once positioned in a single of the crystal bulbs, and the heavy violet gas—which should have been disassociated protons and electrons from the disrupted limestone—was allowed to fill the bulb via one of many various obvious tubes. The operator watched a bit gauge, and on the correct quick, faraway from the bulb—not the development, however the accomplished item, shaped of any wanted aspect!
